That's why we've done the hard work for you with our in-depth, rigorous research. We looked at many different electrolyte supplements to form this review, awarding points for ingredients (and their dosages), price, packaging, manufacturing facilities, customer satisfaction, and - most importantly - whether they positively impacted our users’ wellbeing. Read on to discover our final verdict.

Will a sleep supplement really work for me?

Doctors are more and more regulary putting patients on extremely strong pharmiceuticals to manage sleep issues. These drugs are not suitable for long term use and come with a plethora of health risks when taken this way.

But, over the last century, scientists and researchers have discovered that numerous natural ingredients can have a truly positive effect on the quality of our sleep. A good sleep supplement can be life changing for anyone suffering with sleep problems.

What exactly are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are essential minerals that help to regulate our body’s nerve and muscle function, and fluid balance. Sometimes, our lifestyles can knock our electrolyte levels out of sync, which may show up as tiredness, confusion, muscle weakness or an irregular heart rate.

The main electrolytes that most people need to maintain proper bodily function, hydration, nerve signaling, and muscle contraction are sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Do I need electrolytes?

An electrolyte supplement replenishes the essential minerals our bodies lose when we sweat - something water can’t do on its own. But away from exercise, an electrolyte supplement can be beneficial any time you need to rehydrate - whether that’s after a late night, before a busy day, or simply when you feel low on energy.

An electrolyte supplement is the only way to restore lost minerals like potassium, sodium and magnesium.

Every electrolyte has its role: sodium and potassium support nerve function and balance out body fluids, calcium keeps our bones and heart healthy, and magnesium maximises the effect of every mineral

What should I look for in my electrolytes?

  • Sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium - in doses that actually make a difference
  • A natural flavouring that balances the salt and citric acid to provide a crisp and refreshing drink and no overly salty or "flat" tastes.
  • 100% natural ingredients
  • Caffeine-free formulations (if you want to avoid the notorious crash)
  • Manufactured in the UK in quality conditions, following GMP guidelines

What should I avoid in my electrolytes?

  • Fillers and binders that bulk out a product, or any other artificial colours or flavours
  • Bad flavour profiles - check reviews for this and look for people reviewing the taste.
  • Cheap, low-potency products that are too low dosage for you to feel any health benefits
  • Fake reviews - particularly on Amazon where ‘paid for’ reviews are rife
  • Products manufactured outside of the UK in factories that are unsafe.

We liked that Hydree is sugar free and contains a solid amount of minerals for everyday hydration
(Copyright Extracted)

Overview

Taking the top spot is Hydree from Extracted. We found many of the electrolytes we reviewed either contain low doses of each mineral, or had additional ingredients that provide no health benefit. Some of the other products we tested had an inconsistent texture, took a long time to dissolve and tasted either too "flat" or salty.

By contrast, Hydree is a clean formula, packaged in 24 easy sachets for on-the-go hydration and contained optimal doses of each mineral: sodium (400mg), potassium (250mg), calcium and magnesium (both 100mg).

We enjoyed the subtle natural raspberry lemonade flavour and so did 97% of our study respondents, as well as the fact it contained zero sugar.

People who incorporated Hydree within their daily routine felt genuine benefits: after six weeks of taking daily, 87% said they felt more energised, 91% more focused and 88% believed their performance in the gym had improved. What’s more, almost all (97%) of the regular gym-goers we quizzed said taking Hydree has helped them to feel less fatigued and achy post-workout.

Hydree is vegan, gluten free and keto friendly, meaning it ticks a lot of boxes for those adhering to specific dietary requirements. We appreciated how all of Extracted’s supplements are made here in the UK to the highest standards. A win-win of an electrolyte in our opinion.

Overview

Fast&Up is a growing supplements brand and branch of Swiss-owned pharmaceuticals company, Novelty Pharma.

Whilst the tablet form markets itself as being convenient for on-the-go hydration, they actually took a long time to dissolve and left our water with a strange, almost thick consistency. This led 88% of our survey respondents claiming they prefer an easy-to-mix powder instead.

What’s more, whilst we enjoyed some of the flavours, they tasted artificial - so much so, we weren’t surprised to see non-nutritional ingredients (including sugar) listed on the back of the tube.

It’s also reassuring to us when we see supplements manufactured here in the UK, but these are made in India (despite its parent company being Swiss).

Overview

SiS - short for Science in Sport - is a popular name in sports endurance supplements and prides itself on having fuelled ‘Olympians, Word Record Holders and World Champions’ since 1992.

Its electrolyte tablets made our list purely because of its physical benefits - specifically, during post-workout recovery. A majority (64%) of our survey respondents said they experienced less (or no) cramping after four weeks of continuous, daily use. However, fewer people (34%) reported improvements to cognitive function (such as memory and focus), which we know is an important feature of electrolytes for many people.

What also irked us slightly is that their website claims the product contains no carbs, yet the ingredients list feature maltodextrin. That’s on top of additives such as humectant and lower-than-hoped doses of magnesium (just 8mg) and potassium (65mg).

Overview

Puresport is a trusted, UK-based natural wellness brand and we were pleased that its hydration sachets contained optimal dosages of the essential electrolytes. A large majority of our survey respondents claimed they felt improvements to their workout performance (65%) and recovery (62%), though a smaller proportion (27%) said they felt cognitive benefits.

While we liked the fact that the variety pack allowed us to trial different flavours, we found some sachets to have an inconsistent texture. In fact, we powder had clumped in many of the sachets we received, which we then had to hand-grind to be able to use it.

All flavours were also incredibly salty - even when we diluted the powder in a litre of water!

Overview

It was important for us to include a pre-mixed electrolyte drink on this list, as we know many people would choose a bottle format for convenience.

We tried no less than 15 electrolyte drinks and found that the large majority were either too sweet, too salty, or loaded with artificial ingredients (whilst having low doses of actual, good-for-you minerals). The only one worthy of a place in our top 5 is MGP’s Hydration Drinks, which is low carb, vegan friendly and contains additional vitamins for wellness support.

Whilst it’s good they offer a range of flavours, we found they left a bitter taste - and because it’s pre-mixed, you can’t easily tweak it to make it more palatable. We also found it to be a little on the expensive side for the amount of electrolytes you get (far lower than others on our list, like Extracted’s Hydree).

The final word

When it comes to choosing an electrolyte supplement, it’s important to choose a product that contains all four essential minerals in optimum, clinically backed dosages - and one that leaves out artificial ingredients that have no health benefit.

After searching high and low for the very best electrolyte supplement, we believe Hydree by Extracted is the best by far.

It contains all essential electrolyte - sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium - in the right doses, is naturally flavoured, and comes in super-handy sachets that support easy on-the-go hydration.
